Point Reyes

Todd's new lookWe met in Los Altos for coffee on a lovely, cool summer’s day. Tyler’s friend, Al, was out visiting from the East coast and had joined the group for the ride, impressing everyone with tales of his recent riding adventures along the coast (3,000 miles worth!) as well as the unique tan lines on his hands! Also joining in were Audrey, CC, Andrew, and Vickie. We mainlined our coffee and then headed north.

Riding up along the freeway, it looked like we would not be afforded more sunshine as we delved into the heavy fog along the coast and across the bridge. Once at the vista point, however, Aussie Rob met us there and brought the sunshine with him. We sallied forth and headed for the lovely Marin backroads, riding along Lucas Valley, Nicasio Valley, Petaluma-Pt Reyes Rd, Hicks Valley, Wilson Hill (great view along this road – which was cut short by the cries of “When is lunch? I’m hungryyyyyy!” – buncha whiners! J), Chileno Valley, Tomales/Petaluma Rd, and finally out to Hwy 1.

We arrived at Pt. Reyes and mosied in to the Station for a well earned lunch and lots of good conversation. While there, Joseph (who lives nearby) made a surprise appearance after he recognized Tyler’s bike in the street (hey, Joseph, next time bring your bike and ride with us!! J). Well sated, we geared up and were ready to head for the lighthouse when Vickie pulled her bike to the side… and didn’t move from that spot. Turns out her bike had a broken clutch cable. So our ride was sidetracked for the moment as we waited with her for a tow truck… to the tune of THREE HOURS (not impressed with Progressive’s tow service). Seems I’m just not destined to make it out to the Pt. Reyes lighthouse as this was the 2nd time that journey had been derailed… hmmm, third time’s the charm?

So we hung out on the sidewalk, Rob cranked up the stereo on his RT and we boogied in the streets (well, some of us did… others just sat and pretended not to know us), got ice cream, took rides on each others’ bikes (was worried that Al may not have ever come back when he took Tyler’s new ride, a 1998 Triumph Trophy, for a zippy ride), and perused the fliers for local events – spying a holistic hula hoop class (who’da thunk?) among other interesting activities. Nothing like a bunch of bikers to have a good time doing nothing!

Finally, the tow truck arrived and our wonderful road crew members helped load it safely onto the flat bed for its journey to the dealer in Marin. Waving goodbye to her bike, Vickie got to ride with Rob on his trusty RT as we headed south along Hwy 1 and onto Panoramic Hwy (such fun that one is!) before making our last stop for the day just before the freeway. Rob headed for home in Sausalito and Vickie now got to sample the back seat of Al’s rented Harley for a lift home. The fog was thick again as we headed for home, everyone in one piece and glad for the comraderie of good riding friends!

Peace,

Tyler
